You are invited to the Legislative Brunch!

Please join us Saturday, January 26 at 9:30 a.m. at Whidbey Golf and Country Club for our Legislative Brunch. We have our usual wonderful buffet menu and we have invited Senator Muzall, Representative Paul, and Representative Smith to join us. As before, we have an incentive for early registration and a final deadline for reservations to give the Club a final count.

Reservations received by January 11:  $25
Reservations received between January 12-January 18:  $30
Reservations must be received by January 18.

Wow 2020 is here and with it the centennial celebration of LWV! 
Across the country, events to honor the League and its 100 years of Non-Partisan political activism are being planned.  Here closer to home, the LWVWI I is gearing up for three major events over the course of the year.  
Feb 14 - A birthday Party for the League at Island County Historical Society!
Spring. The League will provide support for the ICHS “Cemetery tours”, highlighting the pioneering women of Whidbey Island -  
Late summer a Celebration of the passage of the 19th amendment with a Suffragists Parade down main Street in Coupeville Culminating at the town park with speeches from notable Women Activists and MORE!
As you can Imagine, we will need lots of help to get this off the ground. A planning meeting has been scheduled for Monday Jan 13 at 2:00 at the home of Mendy McLean-Stone 763 El Gato, Coupeville 98239.  This first meeting will be mainly organizational and task defining. If you are interested in participating but can’t make the meeting please email your interest to [email protected]   
Our first priority will be planning the birthday Party February 14 at the ICHS museum.
Everyone with interest in helping celebrate the first 100 years is welcome.
In today’s highly partisan political atmosphere the League’s non-partisan stance in support of voting rights and public policy issues has become more important than ever.

Democracy Lobby Day 2020
 A Powerful Day of Advocating for Democracy in Olympia 
January 21, 2020, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
 
Your voice is powerful. Legislators constantly tell us how important it is to be present to advocate for good government. Democracy bills will help Washington State continue to lead other states in strengthening our democracy. The issues we will be advocating for on Democracy Lobby Day—expanding voting access, modernizing redistricting, strengthening campaign finance laws, preventing foreign influence on our elections, and promoting government ethics—make all our other priorities possible!
 
Join us January 21st in Olympia for Democracy Lobby Day where you will:
 
·               Learn about critical democracy issues and bills
·               Be trained by professional lobbyists
·               Meet with your state legislators
·               Network with others from your area
 
This event is open to all, please encourage your friends and everyone that cares about a strong democracy to attend. 
 
Carpooling and homestays the night before the event are available. Please indicate your interest when you register.

Trudy Sundberg Lecture Series

Once again a wonderful speaker will share her passion in honor of the memory of Trudy Sundberg. We have an opportunity to share in the sponsorship of this event. If you would like to participate, please send your check to LWVWI PO Box 1933 Oak Harbor, WA 98277. We are hoping to raise $500 by Feb 25. Thank you!

Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha is a pediatrician, professor, and public health advocate who spearheaded efforts to address Flint, Michigan’s water crisis. In 2014, a change in the city’s water source resulted in astronomical amounts of lead leaching into the drinking water, causing irreversible damage to Flint’s residents. As a local pediatrician, Dr. Hanna-Attisha was shocked that the government ignored complaints, protests, and reports from citizens, journalists, and experts about Flint’s water. She decided that the only way to stop the lead poisoning would be to present undeniable proof on a national platform.




Great Decisions Schedule for 2020

The Great Decisions program is sponsored by the Foreign Policy Association to inform and engage its participants in important world issues. The topics for 2020 have been announced. You can find out more information at https://www.fpa.org/great_decisions/. 

We are continuing our exciting partnership with Sno-Isle Libraries in order to include our greater community. They will be including Great Decisions information on their website at the beginning of 2020, and the LWVWI will also explore other publicity options to spread the word about this opportunity to delve into world matters through a substantive, guided discussion. Note that each group is meeting on a different day and time. Participants may attend any group at any time without reservations or RSVP without committing to a particular group. Food and beverages are allowed at all library conference rooms.

Sign Up and Open Up: Keeping Our LWVWA Community Informed!
Your League can be the most informed in Washington (yes, we can keep track of this).
TWIL (This Week in League) is THE way friends and members get the inside scoop on neighboring Leagues and the State League issues, ideas, and events.  It is quick to scan, there are copies archivedon the For Memberssection of LWVWA.org. The goal is to have 100% member subscribers, and 95% of them regularly opening the link to check it out.  If you have signed up for this and aren't getting it check your spam filter. If you haven’t signed up for it, or you aren’t sure, sign up here.
Not Sure How to Login to the “Members Only” Section of LWVWA.org?
Here is a quick refresher on how to do this:
1.    Visit our website: www.lwvwa.org
2.    Click on “FOR MEMBERS” in the menu bar—it is on the far right.
3.    Click on the “Log in” link in the gold bar. (Alternatively, you can also click on the “Log in” link in the purple section of the footer on any page.)
4.    Enter your email and password and click on the blue “Log in” button. 
a.    If you have forgotten your password (or never had one in the first place!), click on the “Forgot password” link to the right of the blue “Log in” button.
b.    On this page, enter your email address and then type the (somewhat difficult to read) characters that appear in the grey box into the “*Code” section.
c.    This will generate an email to that account that contains a new password for you to use. If you get an error message that tells you “Email not found,” contact Amy at [email protected] (206) 622-8961 and she will help you.
5.    Once you are logged in, you can now access the members only content. If you click on “FOR MEMBERS” in the menu bar now, either a submenu will appear for you to use to navigate, or, it will take you to the “For Members” page where a new menu will appear under the main menu that will give you access to the restricted content.


We encourage you to attend board meetings!
Our board meetings are open to all members and would be a good opportunity for you to share your thoughts and support the work of the League. You are welcome to receive the board meeting agendas.  Email us at [email protected], and we will happily add you to the email list.
